As most of you know, I've been extremely focused on making sure that Long Beach transforms into a technology leader and hub for innovation. We have made an incredible amount of progress in the last few years. This includes launching the "Go Long Beach' Smartphone Application, increasing our social media presence, authoring an open government initiative, putting contracts online, launching free WiFi initiatives for our parks and libraries, and upgrading our technology throughout the city.
Last night the City Council voted to support our proposal to begin a process of installing free WiFi in our City Parks. The city is currently installing free WiFi in our all of our City Libraries by the end of 2013, and this will expand our WiFi service already at the Long Beach Airport and City Hall.
Yesterday I was appointed by the State Senate to the California Coastal Commission, which has the duty of overseeing all coastal development in our state, and protecting and preserving public access to our beaches and waterways. I am extremely grateful to everyone who supported my nomination, including Mayor Bob Foster, State Senator Ricardo Lara, Heal the Bay Foundation, the Sierra Club, the Surfrider Foundation and the National Resources Defense Council.
This year was a good year for our city, and I'm proud of our Mayor and City Council for guiding the city in a positive direction. Even in these tough economic times we were able to reduce our structural deficit, invest in infrastructure, and make important upgrades in technology. We built new developments, and have streamlined the way we do business.
I am proud to report that for the second year in a row, Long Beach has been named a Top 10 Digital City by the Center for Digital Government and Government Technology. Long Beach was recognized for many successful innovations implemented over the past few years to reduce costs and improve efficiency, as well as increasing community involvement
"GO LONG BEACH" allows iPhone or Android users to upload a photo of graffiti, sidewalk damage, broken street signs, or potholes, and use GPS tracking technology to instantly report the issue to the City.
You can download "GO LONG BEACH" for Android phones from the Droid Market, or the App Store for iPhones.
Each month, Long
Beach Animal Care Services provides two (2) low-cost vaccination and licensing
clinics at community centers and parks throughout the City.
